Up on the roof

Two years ago, the University of Virginia Board of Visitors approved bond-backed spending of up to $6.7 million (including structural, fire-suppression, and elevator modifications) for a roof-top helipad at University Hospital. And earlier this year, the resulting structure began receiving patients from medical helicopters including Pegasus and, as seen here, from PHI Air Medical.

In the short-term, the move lets UVA build its so-called East Chiller Plant. In the long-term, UVA plans to expand the Emergency Department onto the site of the old helipad and reorient Lee Street so it reaches Roosevelt Brown Boulevard.
